Arguably the most famous view of Slovenia is a crystal-blue lake with a tiny island, a charming church, and a fairytale castle perched above it — all framed by snow-covered mountains. This is Lake Bled, a picture-perfect alpine treasure that has become one of the country’s most iconic destinations.
But what many visitors don’t realize is that just a short drive away lies another alpine gem — Lake Bohinj. Larger, wilder, and less crowded, Bohinj offers a more tranquil slice of the Slovenian Alps and an incredible gateway to Triglav National Park.
If you’re planning a trip to Slovenia, here’s why you should visit both.
Lake Bled
Few places are as effortlessly beautiful as Lake Bled. Whether you’re here for a day trip or a weekend escape, there’s plenty to do:
- Walk around the lake: The 6 km (3.7 mile) path circles the lake, offering postcard-perfect views from every angle.
- Ride a pletnja boat: Take a traditional wooden boat to Bled Island, ring the wishing bell in the church, and soak in the serenity.
- Try Blejska kremšnita: Don’t miss Bled’s legendary cream cake — a flaky, creamy treat that’s been a local favorite for decades.
- Swim: In summer, the crystal-clear water is irresistible for a refreshing dip.
- Hike to Ojstrica viewpoint: A short but steep walk rewards you with one of the most iconic views in all of Slovenia.
Parking at Lake Bled
Finding parking at Bled can be a challenge, especially during weekends and summer holidays. Parking is busy and expensive, but not impossible to find if you know what to expect.
- There are several paid parking lots around the lake and in the town center.
- You can sometimes find public street parking, but spots are limited and tend to fill up early.
- Traffic can be heavy, particularly on the narrow roads leading to and from the lake, which aren’t built to handle the volume of summer visitors.
Tip: Arrive early in the morning and return later in the evening to avoid the worst of the crowds — and enjoy the lake in a calmer atmosphere.
Getting There by Public Transport
If you’d rather not deal with parking, you can take a bus from the main Ljubljana bus station. Tickets can be booked online or directly at the station.
However, there’s a catch:
- During peak hours, buses can fill up quickly. It’s not unusual to see a crowd waiting for return buses to Ljubljana, sometimes missing one or two before managing to board.
- Travel times can also vary, depending on traffic conditions.
Tip: Leave Ljubljana early, and plan some extra time for your return journey — especially if you’re visiting during the summer.
Lake Bohinj
Just 30 minutes from Bled lies Lake Bohinj, the largest permanent lake in Slovenia — and, many locals would argue, the most beautiful. Surrounded by dramatic peaks and lush forests, Bohinj feels more peaceful and authentic, a perfect spot for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

Bohinj’s water is famously clear — and cold, even in summer. It’s refreshing on hot days, and there are plenty of grassy beaches and shaded spots around the lake where you can relax, picnic, or simply enjoy the view. - Water Sports
If you’re feeling adventurous, try kayaking, paddleboarding, or canoeing. The calm surface of the lake is perfect for exploring by water, and equipment rentals are available near Ribčev Laz. - Walking and Hiking

What to Know Before You Go
Parking
Parking at Bohinj is generally easier than at Bled, but still paid and can be pricey, especially near the lake itself. To save money and avoid stress:
- Park further away, for example in Bohinjska Bistrica, and use the shuttle service to the lake.
- The shuttles are well-organized and run frequently during the main season.

Public Transport
You can reach Bohinj by train to Bohinjska Bistrica (check the Slovenian Railways timetable), and then take the shuttle bus or a local bus to the lake.
Alternatively, buses run from Ljubljana, though they pass through Bled — which can mean long delays and crowded rides, especially in peak summer.
Tip: If you’re visiting in July or August, plan extra travel time or go early in the morning to beat the traffic.
