In the last few years, Ljubljana has definitely gotten more expensive—but if you know where to look, there are still plenty of hidden gems where you can eat well without spending too much.
Best value for money: Marjetica
Marjetica is a cult cafeteria near the city centre, loved for its large portions and homemade food. You can get a 2-course meal (main + dessert, salad, or soup) for around 8 euros, which is hard to beat. They’re also famous for their desserts - especially potica, a rolled dough pastry filled with various fillings, and one of Slovenia’s most iconic treats.

Quick warm bite: Hitra žlica
A small spot right in the heart of the city on Nazorjeva Street. Hitra žlica offers a great selection of hearty soups and stews - both meat and vegetarian options. Meals come with bread, and they also have a few desserts if you want something extra. Simple, filling, and perfect for a quick lunch.
Look for "malica"
- Malica refers to a small lunch-time meal, usually served between 11:00 and 15:00. Many places offer special deals during this time, making it one of the best ways to eat well for less in Ljubljana.
Moji Štruklji Slovenije
A great place to try traditional Slovenian dumplings (štruklji). Go for a combo: a dumpling and a hearty soup. They also offer malica deals where you can get a stew and a dumpling for around 10 euros - comfort food at its best.

Sarajevo 84 is a fantastic čevabdžinica serving traditional Balkan grill dishes at very reasonable prices. It might not be the best choice if you’re vegetarian, but if you eat meat and want something filling, affordable, and absolutely delicious—this is your spot. Baščaršija is also a great find.
Takeaway / Fast Food
There are plenty of takeaway and fast food spots around the city where you can grab a solid meal for cheap.
For pad thai, try Roza Slon or Babu's.
For falafel, wraps, and Middle Eastern food, go to Fari's or Abi Falafel.
And for a great burger, head to Hood Burger or Smash Ljubljana.
