When summer heat settles over Ljubljana, locals and visitors alike head for the water. Here are some great spots - natural and man-made - where you can cool off and enjoy a refreshing escape from the city.
Rakitna
Just a short drive from Ljubljana, Lake Rakitna is a peaceful retreat surrounded by forest. Ideal for a day trip, it offers swimming, picnicking, and a refreshing escape into nature.
Iški Vintgar
For those who don’t mind a bit of a chill, Iški Vintgar is a gorge known for its icy waters and stunning natural surroundings. Park at the entrance and follow the marked trail—it's an easy walk, but sturdy shoes are recommended. The water is very cold, but the ambient temperature stays pleasantly cool, making it a great summer getaway.
Podpeško Jezero
Located just a short drive (or bus ride) from Ljubljana, Podpeško Lake is a popular swimming spot with clean water and a calm atmosphere. Great for families and easily accessible.
Borovniški Pekel
Near Borovnica, Borovniški Pekel offers a series of cascading waterfalls perfect for cooling off. The first two falls are quite easy to reach and popular with local kids who leap from rocks into the water - but be cautious, as the water can be shallow.
If you decide to hike further, the trail becomes steeper and includes some minor climbing - not overly difficult, but not suitable for very young children. Wear proper shoes for traction and safety.
Plaža Sava (Sava Beach)
An accessible natural beach area right in Ljubljana, Plaža Sava offers a family-friendly space to relax by the river. It’s a rare example of a well-maintained, natural riverside swimming spot within the city.
Public Pools in Ljubljana
If you prefer a more structured environment, Ljubljana has several public pools:
- Kopališče Kolezija – Modern outdoor complex with a swimming pool, kids’ pool, and lounging areas.

Ljubljanica River: Paddle, Don’t Swim
While it’s technically possible to swim in the Ljubljanica River, it’s not recommended. Instead, rent a SUP (stand-up paddleboard) or kayak and enjoy the calm waters from above. It’s a relaxing and scenic way to experience the city from a different perspective.

During the summer Prešernov trg changes into "The Area With Ljubljana's Own Weather". It's a unique installation of rain right in the middle of the main square and it is the perfect way to cool down on a hot day - just walk through it!
