Fall is arguably one of the best times to travel anywhere — warm days, golden leaves, cozy evenings — and Slovenia is one of the most underrated destinations in Europe during these months. The crowds thin out, the mountains put on a color show, and the whole country slips into a slower, more atmospheric rhythm.
Fall Activities
Grape harvest (trgatev): Slovenia's wine regions come alive in September and early October as vineyards bring in the harvest. Many wineries welcome visitors to pick grapes, help with pressing, or simply sit down for a glass of the season's first must.
Foraging: Fall is prime season for mushroom hunting and chestnut picking. Head into the forests around the country for both, but you don't even need to leave the cities — chestnut trees line plenty of streets and parks, and roasted chestnuts start showing up from street vendors as the weather cools.
Hiking
Early fall is one of the best times to visit the mountains - the mountain huts are usually still open and the temperatures cool down a bit.
From middle to late October the mountains get a special attraction - the larches. Unlike most conifers, larches turn a brilliant gold before dropping their needles, and the Julian Alps put on a spectacular display in October.
The classic spot is Slemenova špica, easily accessible from the Vršič Pass — about a 1.5-hour hike, and manageable for kids too. Just know it's one of the most popular hikes of the season, so start early to beat the crowds especially if you go on a weekend.
For an even bigger dose of gold, head into Triglav National Park around the Triglav Lakes Valley, where entire hillsides of larch turn amber against the alpine peaks.
Ljubljana
Ljubljana is beautiful this time of year. On a crisp fall morning, head up to Rožnik hill for a walk above the city, or duck into one of the many cafés for a coffee (check out our café guide here).
Fall also brings the Ljubljana Marathon, one of the city's biggest annual events, drawing runners and spectators into the streets each October.

Events
Fall in Slovenia comes with its own calendar of traditions worth knowing about:
- September — School starts, and with it comes fazaniranje, the light-hearted hazing tradition where new high schoolers ("fazani," or pheasants) are welcomed by upperclassmen. If you’re around on 1st of September look out for teens with Fs drawn on them with markers, although some other traditions such as flour throwing or painting the students have also emerged in the last few years.
- October — University starts on 1st of October, kicking off a season of freshman parties across the city.
- October — Teden restavracij (Restaurant Week). Held annually in mid-October, this is Slovenia's biggest culinary event, with over 100 top restaurants across the country offering special tasting menus at a friendly fixed price. - Halloween. It's a smaller affair than Pust (Slovenia's big spring carnival), but you'll still find a fair number of Halloween parties around the country. If you’re in Ljubljana, check out Metelkova.
- All Saints' Day (November 1st). This is a day of quiet respect, when people visit graves to honor those who've passed. If you happen to be out once night falls, walk by a cemetery — you'll find thousands of candles lit, turning the grounds into a genuinely moving, glowing sight.
- Martinovanje. St. Martin's Day, celebrated around November 11th, marks the moment when grape must officially "becomes" wine and is widely celebrated with festivals and feasts. Look out for specific Martinovanje menus in restaurants for the traditional feast: roasted duck or goose, red cabbage and mlinci.
