You can drive, but a fantastic option is also the train, which drops you off right in the center of Kočevje and takes roughly 70 minutes from Ljubljana. It's a genuinely scenic ride, passing through Grosuplje, Ribnica, and the wooded hills of Dolenjska before arriving in town — a relaxing alternative to driving, especially if you'd rather not worry about parking.
When you arrive, you'll likely notice bear statues, paw prints, and bear-themed branding all over town — that's because Kočevsko is one of Slovenia's most important brown bear habitats, home to one of the densest bear populations in Europe. That doesn't mean bears roam around town or that you'll casually stumble on one — but it does mean that if you're heading into the forest to hike or bike, it's worth taking sensible precautions (making some noise, staying on marked trails, keeping food secured).
If you actually want to see a bear, the local tourism organization Zavod Kočevsko runs guided educational tours, typically running from April to early September, where you can learn more about these animals and spot their traces in the wild.

Kočevje itself is a quaint little town with its own hostel, Bearlog, and plenty of outdoor and sports activities on offer. A great part of any visit is Rudniško jezero (also called Kočevsko jezero), a striking artificial lake formed in a former open-pit coal mine that closed in the 1970s. Considered one of the cleanest lakes in Slovenia, it's up to 40 meters deep with an emerald-green color, and it's a lovely spot for a summer dip, swimming, SUP-ing, or a lakeside walk — there's a nature trail that circles the shore, and even ice skating in winter when it freezes over.
One of the most unique things to do in Slovenia is visiting Bunker Škrilj, a secret Cold War-era military bunker built roughly 80 meters underground near Kočevska Reka. Constructed to support Yugoslavia's hidden command bunker in Gotenica in case of a Soviet attack, it remained a closely guarded state secret for decades and only opened to the public in 2017. Inside you'll find around 500 meters of tunnels and six underground rooms, complete with its own water supply and generators. Access is strictly by guided tour only — you can't visit independently, as the surrounding forest is still a restricted military area — so make a reservation ahead through the tourist office in Kočevska Reka.
Krokar is one of Slovenia's untouched primeval beech forests, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017. Since entry into the primeval forest itself isn't allowed, visits are made up of guided hike along the nearby Borovec nature trail, which brings you right to the edge of the forest reserve for a close-up view of these centuries-old giants.

There are plenty of bike trails and hikes around the area, ranging from easy lakeside loops to more demanding forest routes. The local tourist board has well-documented information on hiking and biking trails, and renting a bike locally is easy. As always here — stay alert for bears while out on the trails, and it's best to stick to marked paths.
There are also organized hiking and sports events through the area which attract plenty of visitors. Two of the most popular are 36 or 64km trek through the forests Po medvedovih stopinjah and Kočevsko Outdoor Festival.
A bit further away, but still quite accessible, is the Kolpa river along the Croatian border. Rafting here is a lot less adrenaline-filled than on the Soča — the Kolpa is calm, warm (reaching up to 28°C in summer), and shallow in many stretches — which actually makes it a better choice for families with young children. Along the river there are also several natural swimming spots, and it's often nicknamed Slovenia's longest riviera.
