Start your first day slow and simple.
Begin with breakfast from a local bakery - Ljubljana has excellent bakeries on almost every corner. Grab a coffee and a fresh pastry to go, then head toward the city center.
Here is an our guide to the local bakeries.
Next, walk through the local markets near the Central Market. This area is lively in the mornings, filled with fresh produce, local products, and a real sense of daily city life.
To get oriented, join a free walking tour or simply stroll through the Old Town, walking along the Ljubljanica River. This is the perfect way to admire Jože Plečnik’s architecture, from the bridges to hidden courtyards and riverbanks.
For lunch, stop somewhere casual in the Old Town - there are plenty of quick, affordable spots for traditional Slovenian food or modern bistro-style dishes. If you want some traditional foods, check out this guide.
After lunch, head up to Ljubljana Castle. You can walk up if you’re feeling energetic or take the funicular for an easy ride and great views. Once at the top, explore the castle grounds, visit the tower, or check out the interactive Time Machine experience if you’re curious about the city’s history.

On the way back down, stop for a coffee or ice cream by the river - this is practically mandatory.
If you’re still feeling good, take a walk toward Špica, a popular riverside spot where locals hang out, especially in warmer months.
End your day with drinks by the river, or - if you’re visiting on a Friday- don’t miss Open Kitchen (Odprta kuhna), the weekly food market offering dishes from all over the world.
If you want to take it easy, start your day with brunch - Ljubljana has plenty of great cafés serving everything from classic breakfasts to modern brunch plates.
Spend the morning exploring the city’s Secession (Art Nouveau) architecture, especially around Miklošičeva Street and the wider city center. It’s a quieter but beautiful side of Ljubljana that often gets overlooked.

After lunch, choose one or two museums depending on your interests:
Read our museum guide here!
Ljubljana’s museums are compact and well-curated, so even a short visit is worthwhile.
In the late afternoon head to Metelkova - Ljubljana’s alternative cultural center. Wander around the colorful courtyards, check out galleries, or check out the nightlife during the weekend. It’s one of the most unique parts of the city for sure - however stay in the well lit areas as sometimes there can be a bit of trouble with some groups that hang out there (although we personally never experienced any issues, it’s always good to be careful).
Start your day with a walk up Rožnik Hill, a green escape just minutes from the city center. It’s a favorite local spot for walking, relaxing, and enjoying nature without leaving the city.
After lunch, take some time to explore small shops, local design stores, and souvenir spots - Ljubljana is great for unique, locally made finds.
In the afternoon, consider a half-day trip:
If you’d rather stay in town, use this time to visit more museums, check out some events or simply enjoy a final coffee or meal by the river.
