Discovering the Ancient Lake Dwellers of Ljubljana Marshes – Koliščarji

During the early Holocene period, the Ljubljana Marshes were covered by a shallow lake that slowly turned into wetlands over thousands of years. Around 6500 years ago, the first farmers settled along its edges. To protect themselves from floods and damp ground, they built wooden houses raised on piles - structures that gave the culture its name.

The World’s Oldest Wheel

In 2002, archaeologists uncovered a 5,150-year-old wooden wheel with its axle, making it the oldest known wheel in the world. This remarkable object reveals how advanced and inventive the pile dwellers were.
