A short drive from Ljubljana brings you to this magical alpine plateau dotted with traditional shepherd’s huts. Stop at the ones offering homemade cheese or enjoy a lunch with a view.
In spring (usually mid to late April), the meadows are especially magical as they burst into color with blooming crocuses.
You can take a cable car and chairlift up, or hike from designated parking spots.

Here is a description of the walking path from Kranjski rak where you can park.

About an hour’s drive from Ljubljana, followed by a 30–60 minute walk, brings you to Kofce mountain hut - famous for its delicious štruklji. They also run a shop in Ljubljana (Moji Štruklji Slovenije), but honestly, nothing compares to enjoying a hot meal with fresh mountain air and spectacular views of the Karavanke.
The hut also serves seasonal dishes like mushroom soup, homemade žganci, and sour milk, and local spirits all at very fair prices, making the trip especially nice for a weekend lunch.
The hike is considered family-friendly since it’s not too steep or exposed making it a safe and rewarding choice.
Trail & parking:
Kranjska Gora is one of Slovenia’s most popular alpine towns and an excellent base for easy hikes. Some highlights:
If you have time, drive up the winding road to the Vršič Pass. From there, hike to Slemenova Špica, especially stunning in early November when the larches turn golden and the whole area glows with autumn colors.
Lake Bohinj is a jewel in the Julian Alps, offering endless opportunities for hiking. For an underrated but rewarding trail, head to Planina Jezero, a peaceful alpine pasture with a hut by the lake.
Once there, you can enjoy a traditional meal at the hut while admiring the tranquility of the lake (note: swimming is not allowed).

Other options in the area:

The Jezersko valley is stunning even without hiking, but if you’re up for more adventure, the trail to Češka koča (Czech Hut) is a must. Although it is beautiful, we wouldn’t recommend this hike for completely inexperienced hikers or young children, as some parts of the trail are quite narrow and exposed, but is ideal for fit hikers looking for a short yet exciting hike. The hut itself sits dramatically beneath towering cliffs, offering jaw-dropping views.
Ljubelj Pass is a popular starting point for many trails. It also has a big parking space, just note that a large part of it is payable.
The Pokljuka Plateau is a year-round playground: in summer for hikers and cyclists, in autumn for foraging and in winter for cross-country skiing and sledding.
Two easy hikes starting from Rudno Polje are especially worth your time:
For a slightly bigger challenge, but still close to Ljubljana consider Stol (2,236 m), the highest peak of the Karavanke range.
