Being so close to the coffee capital of Italy, Slovenia naturally takes its coffee seriously. With Italy just next door, it’s no surprise that Ljubljana is full of fantastic coffee spots. Whether you need an early morning essential or a little afternoon pick-me-up, here are some of the best places across the city.
Stow Coffee
Stow is well known for its great coffee and has a few locations across town. You can grab a quick to-go at Prešernov trg, or sit down and enjoy the cultural atmosphere inside the City Museum or the modern museum Cukrarna. It’s a reliable go-to whether you’re in a rush or looking to slow down.
Kavarna Specialka
Kavarna Specialka offers delicious coffee, with a great story and design. Drink it while sitting on true Slovenian design icons by Niko Kralj — the Lupina and Rex chairs — or soak up the sun on the terrace. Also, don’t forget to grab their cinnamon roll.
Ledena kava or Iced Coffee?
- Be careful when you’re ordering - you might be in for a pleasant (or unpleasant) surprise. While you should generally be fine if you order “iced coffee,” ordering "ledena kava" (which also translates to iced coffee) will get you a coffee with a scoop of ice cream and whipped cream on top. It’s an absolutely delicious summer treat, but if you’re just after a classic iced coffee, it’s safer to order "kava z ledom".
Cafetino
Cafetino is a small roastery offering a great selection of coffees from around the world, all roasted and ground in-house. You can also enjoy them right there in their cozy café in the old town.
