Summer in Slovenia, spanning from June to August, is a fun season full of opportunities for exploring. The season kicks off with June, which can be a bit unpredictable in terms of weather - some years bring heatwaves with temperatures soaring above 30°C for weeks, while other years are cooler, with daytime highs around 15–20°C. But the rest of the summer is usually hot and mostly dry, with occasional storms in between, so it is one of the best times to explore the country, offering a rich mix of outdoor activities, cultural events, and natural beauty.
Escaping to the Sea
For many, the ultimate summer getaway is to the coast. Although most people have their main vacation in Croatia, the Slovenian coast should not be overlooked. Small (just over 46 km long), but unforgettable - Slovenia’s coastline boasts charming Mediterranean towns and picturesque beaches. Popular spots include Piran, Portorož, and Izola, known for their historic architecture and seaside promenades.
Keep in mind that the coast can get very busy during peak summer. Travel from Ljubljana usually takes about an hour, but in peak season, journeys can stretch up to three (!!!) hours.
Planning your trip early in the day or visiting lesser-known coastal towns can help you avoid crowds.
Mountain Adventures
By June, most snow in the Slovenian Alps has melted, making it ideal for hiking and mountain exploration. The Julian Alps and Kamnik–Savinja Alps offer trails for every level of hiker. Beginners can enjoy shorter, scenic routes, while experienced hikers might try multi-day “hut-to-hut” hikes, staying in mountain huts along the trail. Lakes and Cooling Off
Slovenia is a paradise for freshwater lovers. Lakes and rivers provide a perfect way to cool off on hot summer days. Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj are iconic and always a great choice, but can get crowded. For quieter experiences, consider lesser-known spots like:
- Kolpa River – Located in the southern region of Bela Krajina, the Kolpa is a warm, calm river ideal for swimming, especially around Podzemelj. Its gentle flow makes it perfect for families, sunbathing on the riverbanks, and even light kayaking.
- Javorniški Rovt – This hidden gem features a small turquoise lake fed by a stream and surrounded by lush greenery and dramatic gorges. The water is extremely cold, ranging from 4–8°C, however its secluded location and unique scenery make it a perfect spot for hikers and nature lovers looking to escape the crowds.
- Soča River – Famous for its striking turquoise waters, the Soča is one of Slovenia’s most iconic natural sights. Swimming is possible but challenging due to the cold temperature, usually around 8–12°C in summer. Beyond swimming, the Soča Valley is a hub for adventure sports: whitewater rafting, kayaking, canyoning, bungee jumping, ziplining, and even skydiving are popular here.
